Simply stated, cashmere is the fine fiber that is harvested from the undercoat of the cashmere goat, which is indigenous to a tiny portion of northern Asia, primarily, China, Mongolia, and Tibet. The finest fiber—with a diameter one-fifth the size of a human hair, is sourced almost exclusively from Inner Mongolia, home turf of the Zalaa Jinst white goat, the only entirely white breed of cashmere goat in world.

Cashmere goats thrive in extremely cold and harsh climates. of Mongolia's Gobi Desert, protected from the extreme climate by the long, fine fibers for which they are prized. Cashmere apparel, once found in the closets of wealthy and fashion-savvy consumers, has gone completely mainstream. Over the past two decades, cashmere has flooded the market. In 2017, over $1.5 billion of cashmere products were exported globally.
